A direct attack on Europe's current trajectory was launched by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who warned that uncontrolled mass migration and the erosion of core values could destroy the "common civilization" that binds the West and weaken ties with the United States.
Referring to the Trump administration's National Security Strategy, Rubio stressed that Europe's shift toward "cultural erasure" endangers alliances based on freedom and self-governance.
During a press conference at the Department of State in Washington DC on Friday, Rubio responded to reactions from European leaders regarding the new National Security Strategy, which criticized globalist policies that fuel mass migration and restrict freedom of speech.
"You go to these NATO meetings and you meet people. They tell you about our shared history, our shared heritage, our shared values, our shared priorities. That is what they invoke as the reason for the alliance's existence," Rubio stated.
"Well, if you erase your shared history, your shared culture, your shared ideology, your shared priorities, your shared principles, then what is left? You simply have a defense agreement. That is all," he added.
The difference with the US
Rubio underscored that the United States was founded on "Western values," such as the principles of liberty, individuality, and self-government, noting that "many of these ideas that led to the founding of our country were born in some of these parts of the Western alliance."
At the same time, he expressed concern that "particularly in parts of Western Europe, the things that underpin our alliance and our ties with them could be threatened in the long term."
"And by the way, there are leaders in these countries who recognize this. Some say it openly. Some say it privately. In the east and south of Europe, they are much more open about it. However, it is a factor that must be addressed," he added.
Referring to mass migration, Rubio cited the recent Islamist terrorist attack during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Australia as a grim example of its consequences.
"Mass migration over the last decade has been particularly disruptive, not only for the United States but also for continental Europe and, in some cases, for the Indo-Pacific. This is a real challenge facing many developed Western countries, and I believe it is intense in parts of Europe as well," he said.
Mass migration
Rubio highlighted the distinction between controlled immigration and "mass migration," characterizing the latter as "negative," as it is "very difficult for any society to absorb and integrate hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people in a short period of time, especially if they come from the other side of the world."
"I believe it is a growing concern in Europe. There are other voices in Europe and obviously in Australia who have expressed concern about this. These are facts. They do not make you anyone's enemy. What they do is remind us that, as a sovereign country, you have the right to control how many people you absorb and who those people are. This is a very basic sovereign right," he concluded.
These statements come amid growing transatlantic tensions, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz describing certain parts of the American strategy as "unacceptable" from a European perspective and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen calling on America to stay out of European affairs.
This reaction follows the Trump team's denial of alleged plans to remove countries such as Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Poland from Brussels' influence.
Eurocrats are in a state of panic, with figures like European Council President Antonio Costa accusing the US of "interference," while simultaneously ignoring the restrictions on free speech implemented by the EU itself, including heavy fines on X.
As globalist elites persist with open borders and the restriction of free speech, Rubio's words serve as a wake-up call: sovereign countries must reclaim control or watch their heritage disappear.
