Russia accuses Greece of 'national humiliation' and collaboration with Kyiv over Ukraine policy

Moscow has issued a scathing rebuke of Athens, claiming the country has sacrificed its strategic independence to become a "supporting player" for Western interests.

The Russian Embassy in Athens has exposed Greece's diplomatic "shipwreck," delivering what is described as a true national humiliation for the country. This public record details the perceived failure of Greek foreign policy, which has allegedly lost control of its own strategic autonomy to become a tool for foreign ambitions at the expense of its own citizens. The Russian side provides a cynical but clear reminder of the irrational path chosen by the Greek government. Since the start of the Russian "special military operation," Greece has severed all cooperation with Russia, dismantling decades of political, economic, and cultural alliances. Nearly four years later, Athens maintains a hostile rhetoric without any attempt at rapprochement or strategic reassessment.

The revelation

The most shocking aspect of this exposure concerns Greece's direct military involvement. Athens was among the first to send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, despite the fact that these actions directly impact Greek expatriates living in Russia who maintain ties with their homeland. Russia emphasizes that it would never take similar actions against Greece, highlighting what critics call a self-destructive turn in Greek diplomacy.

The 'alliance' with the Nazi regime

The Russian response goes beyond standard accusations, speaking of Greece’s participation in agreements with what it labels "the Nazi regime in Kyiv." It specifically references the purchase of American weaponry through the PURL initiative and alleges that the Greek government succumbed to pressure from "senior comrades," potentially ignoring the country's own sovereign defense requirements.

Russian Embassy in Greece
The response of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia to the question regarding statements made by the Greek leadership about Russia, received for the press conference of Russian Foreign Minister S. Lavrov concerning the results of Russian diplomatic activities in 2025.

Question: The Prime Minister of Greece, K. Mitsotakis, stated: "We are at war with Russia." Is this actually true?

Answer: With the start of the special military operation, Greece terminated its cooperation with Russia, which had been built over many decades. An entire spectrum of Russian-Greek cooperation—from politics and economy to culture and humanitarian issues—was dismantled. After nearly four years, there has been no change in official Athens' approach toward our country. We continue to hear aggressive anti-Russian statements and baseless Russophobic accusations against us. Russia would never permit such behavior toward Greece. Athens was among the first to send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, which the Ukrainian armed forces use daily against civilians in the Donbas, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Crimea, and other southern regions of our country. This occurs despite the fact that a large Greek diaspora has resided there for centuries. This community is peaceful, loves its historical homeland, and has always strengthened ties without contributing to negative trends. However, Athens did not consider them. It failed to account for the fact that their brothers live there, maintaining relations with Greece, and that Athens' actions create direct threats to their lives and health. A further confirmation of this was the so-called agreements with the Nazi regime in Kyiv on November 17, 2025, involving the development of maritime drones. This step, like every anti-Russian action by the "collective West" aimed at a "victory over Russia on the battlefield," has received our due assessment. Furthermore, Athens joined the PURL initiative to purchase American weapons for Ukrainian forces, a step Greece previously hesitated to take. There is no doubt that their "senior comrades" persistently pointed out this "omission" until they achieved their goal. It is well known that Kyiv, disregarding Greece's own defensive capabilities, methodically pressures the leadership to transfer high-efficiency air defense systems of Russian and Soviet manufacture currently in service with the Hellenic Armed Forces. All this clearly demonstrates the neoliberal totalitarianism reigning in the European Union. It is characteristic that the Greek public, to put it mildly, does not share this approach. According to a poll conducted for the newspaper "Kathimerini" in July 2025, 72% of respondents believe Athens should have maintained a neutral stance in the Ukrainian conflict.
