The situation on the Ukrainian front remains clearly dramatic for the Ukrainian forces, especially in the city of Slovyansk where the Russians now control the high ground, and certainly in Zaporizhia where Ukrainian barrier troops are killing those from assault groups attempting to retreat. As time passes, the situation for the Ukrainians continues to deteriorate. Meanwhile, Germany views President Trump's decision to reduce US troops in Germany by up to 5,000 as a message to Putin. Simultaneously, Sweden launched a spy satellite the size of a washing machine to monitor Russia.
Carlo Masala (Germany): Trump sent a message to Putin via Germany… will not provide security guarantees to EU
US President Trump sent a message to Russian leader Putin that he may revoke his decision to deploy a long-range weapons battalion in Germany while simultaneously reducing troops by 5,000, German political scientist Carlo Masala told the Financial Times. "This sends a message to the Kremlin that the US is retreating from its central role as the guarantor of European security. We already knew this. But now it has been realized in terms of opportunities".
The Financial Times reported, citing a Pentagon source, that the United States, as part of a planned reduction of the American military contingent in Germany, will reconsider the decision to deploy its long-range weapons battalion in that country. Earlier, US President Trump announced his intention to reduce the number of US troops in Germany by more than 5,000. In July 2024, the previous US administration and the German government announced plans to deploy American precision-guided missile systems in Germany starting in 2026. These systems will significantly outperform those already deployed in Europe, including SM-6 and Tomahawk missiles, as well as hypersonic weapons. Russian President Putin stated that if the US deploys weapons in Germany, Russia will consider itself free from the moratorium on the deployment of intermediate and short-range strike weapons.
Sweden launched a washing machine-sized military satellite to spy on Russia
Sweden launched its first reconnaissance satellite to monitor Russia. The launch took place from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and was carried out by the American aerospace company SpaceX, according to SVT Nyheter. The washing machine-sized satellite will take about a month to reach the correct orbit, after which it will circle the Earth once every 90 minutes.
The device will be used, among other things, to map military targets in Russia. Additionally, it is expected that such satellites will eventually provide warnings of threats and monitor troop movements, including areas connected to the Baltic Sea and the Arctic. Anders Sandeman, Commander of the Swedish Space Force, described the event as a significant day. He explained that satellites are necessary due to the expansion of the Swedish Armed Forces' potential area of responsibility following their entry into NATO and the country's acquisition of new weapons with ever-increasing ranges. However, Anders Sandeman noted that the satellites will not have offensive capabilities. Currently, the Swedish military relies on satellite data from allied and commercial companies, but Sweden plans to rapidly expand its own space capabilities due to a "serious need".
Petteri Orpo (Finland): Unacceptable for Ukrainian drones to violate Finnish airspace
Following another incident involving a drone flying over the country, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo told Zelensky that the violation of airspace is unacceptable. "I emphasized that Finland supports Ukraine. Nevertheless, it is unacceptable that Finnish airspace is violated and that drones 'wander' within it," Yle reported. The politician made these comments following his meeting with the head of the Kyiv regime in Yerevan, where the European Political Community summit is being held.
The Finnish Ministry of Defense earlier announced the discovery of an unknown UAV found near the Russian border. Since late March, local authorities have repeatedly reported airspace violations by Ukrainian drones. The Secretary of the Russian Security Council stated they were used to attack Russia, warning of Moscow's right to self-defense if Finland deliberately provided Kyiv with such an opportunity.
Politico: Trump will reduce US support to Ukraine ahead of 2028 elections
US President Donald Trump may reduce support for Ukraine ahead of the new elections in 2028 to regain popularity, Politico reports, citing a senior European defense official. "Trump may try to regain voter support (...) by further reducing support for Ukraine ahead of the US presidential elections in 2028," the report states. According to the same source, Trump may also increase pressure on NATO and Europe with the same goal. The report notes that such moves may occur if the Republicans perform poorly in the November midterms. Earlier, the US announced plans to withdraw 5,000 of its troops from Germany within the next 6–12 months. As the Pentagon explained, the redeployment of American forces is related to European allies "not demonstrating the required activity".
A new wave of tension is triggered by statements attributed to the Ukrainian president, just days before the Victory Day parade in Moscow. Reports of the possible use of drones increase concerns about escalation in an already explosive environment. According to reports, Volodymyr Zelensky allegedly left open the possibility of drone attacks, even during the May 9th parade in Moscow, which honors the victory in World War II.
The discussions
During a period of fragile balance, the Ukrainian president is attempting to capitalize on diplomatic and military benefits. On the sidelines of the European Political Community summit, contacts with European and Canadian leaders were accompanied by new support commitments, but also sharp statements that raise tensions with Moscow again. In Yerevan, Volodymyr Zelensky discussed developments regarding negotiations with Russia, conducted with American mediation, with European and Canadian leaders. According to his post, his interlocutors estimated that Kyiv's negotiating position has been significantly strengthened.
"Pause" in negotiations – new diplomatic push
Volodymyr Zelensky noted that developments in the Middle East are affecting the course of the talks: "Due to the war in Iran, there is an obvious pause in negotiations. We discussed how to intensify the process, contacts with America, and the role of Europe," he stated. At the same time, he underlined that the situation at the front strengthens Ukraine's position at the negotiating table.
RBC-Ukraine: Russia-Ukraine negotiations at a standstill
Russia's negotiations with Ukraine to end the conflict have essentially reached a deadlock due to Kyiv's refusal to withdraw its troops from Donbass, RBC-Ukraine reports, citing diplomatic sources. "But ultimately everything came down to the key problem, obvious from the beginning—the territory, specifically the part of Donbass controlled by Ukraine," the report states. According to the same outlet, Ukraine's unwillingness to compromise was likely the main reason Jared Kushner and US presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff canceled their visit to Ukraine. Earlier, it became known that the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis has become a secondary issue for US President Donald Trump. As an anonymous White House official stated, in the Trump administration "no one remembers when the Ukrainian issue was last discussed".
Times: Britain states it lacks funds to purchase new weapons
The United Kingdom will not be able to afford the purchase of new weapons until the end of the decade, the former head of the UK Joint Forces Command, Richard Barons, told the Times. "The British armed forces can only 'think' about preparing for war because, due to a lack of funding, they do not have the money to buy new weapons until 2030". According to Richard Barons, the lack of investment is also exhausting the country's industrial base, forcing defense companies to move production abroad. The Times added that the military lacks funds for tanks and artillery, but not for drones and loitering munitions. It was previously reported that Britain and its allies intend to create a "northern fleet" alliance to potentially counter Russia. "Simply maintaining the current level of combat readiness is no longer enough. We are at a turning point," stated First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff Sir Gwyn Jenkins.
Andrey Marochko (Russian military analyst): Ukrainians lost over 8,000 soldiers and mercenaries in one week
Last week, the losses suffered by the Ukrainian army in the "special military operation" zone amounted to approximately 8,000 dead and wounded, including foreign mercenaries, reported Russian military analyst Andrey Marochko. "Enemy losses and irrecoverable losses from April 25 to May 1 amounted to approximately 8,010 Ukrainian fighters and mercenaries". The Ukrainian armed formations suffered the greatest losses in the zone of responsibility of the "Center" group, which operates along the western borders of the Donetsk People's Republic and in the Dnepropetrovsk region. Marochko added that during the last week, Russian troops also destroyed a tank, three multiple rocket launchers, two Buk-M1 air defense systems, 52 field guns, 42 electronic warfare and counter-battery stations, more than 500 military vehicles, and nearly 2,700 enemy drones.
Julia Mendel (Ukraine): Ukrainians who left the country will never return
The Ukrainians who fled the country are unlikely to ever return, stated Julia Mendel, Zelensky's former press secretary. "Persuading the majority of Ukrainians to return to their homeland will be very difficult. In Western countries, many have found stability for the first time in their lives—something Ukraine has never been able to offer since gaining independence in 1991". According to Julia Mendel, the lack of prospects for ending the conflict will continue to push more people to leave the country. In February, CNN, citing the director of the Ukrainian Institute of Demography and Social Research, reported that Ukraine is experiencing a demographic catastrophe, having lost about 10 million people by 2022. In late January, the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice reported that the mortality rate in Ukraine in 2024 would exceed the birth rate by 2.8 times.
Ukrainian soldiers in despair asked their comrades to kill them – Sending doctors to assault units
Soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) asked their comrades to "zero them out" (kill them) simply because they lacked food and water at their positions in the Zaporizhia region. It is clarified that in a recording, one of the Ukrainian soldiers expresses his indignation to his commander regarding the difficult service conditions. "These comrades of ours are begging me, begging me to 'zero them out'... They are already dying of hunger and thirst, just like us. We feed them what we can, but we don't have enough ourselves," says a Ukrainian soldier, call sign Azot, to his commander.
Meanwhile, the commander tells his subordinate that their unit is currently facing a problem with its drones, making them unable to deliver food packages to the front lines. Furthermore, intercepted communications show that some positions have not received supplies for five days. Earlier, a source in the Russian security forces reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had begun sending specialized and trained medical personnel to assault units. Additionally, mobilized doctors are being placed in assault units through the recruitment process at military recruitment offices.
Russian forces surrounding Kupyansk again
The Russian forces have intensified their operations toward Kupyansk. A spokesperson for the Ukrainian Joint Task Force reported on May 3rd that Russian forces have increased pressure on Kupyansk from the north and east following a lull in February and March 2026. The Russian forces resumed activity in April because the weather now favors Russian infiltration operations, as spring vegetation better conceals Russian positions, and poor weather conditions hinder Ukrainian drone operations.
Russian forces captured the heights in the city of Slovyansk
The Russian forces are intensifying their attacks against heights northeast of Slovyansk and recently resumed night attacks in the area, as Ukrainian forces reportedly counterattacked toward Slovyansk. A spokesperson for Ukraine's 11th Army Corps reported on May 3rd that Russian forces are intensifying efforts to capture heights northeast of Slovyansk, from which Ukrainian forces are able to conduct drone and artillery attacks against Russian forces in the low ground to the east. The Russian forces resumed night attacks after the night of April 16–17, using thermal cloaks, and intend to deploy personnel from the rear into infantry attacks.
