Did Greece offer millions to settle name dispute? Declassified CIA files spark questions over 1992 'bribery' attempt

Did Greece offer millions to settle name dispute? Declassified CIA files spark questions over 1992 'bribery' attempt

Document recognizes him as a "veteran politician and reformer" with strategic insight

In 1992, the first president of North Macedonia, Kiro Gligorov, reportedly rejected a $100 million financial proposal from Greece to change the country's name, according to a declassified CIA document, despite the economic crisis following the dissolution of Yugoslavia. The document recognizes him as a "veteran politician and reformer" possessing significant strategic insight. In his memoirs, however, he mentions a smaller offer of one million dollars, which he also reportedly refused.

He served as president from 1991–1999 and passed away in 2012 at the age of 94, leaving behind a strong political legacy. In 1992, Konstantinos Mitsotakis was in power and the Minister of Foreign Affairs was Antonis Samaras. The elder Mitsotakis is no longer alive to tell us what happened back then and which individuals from Greece made a $100 million proposal to Skopje. Perhaps the usually vocal Antonis Samaras can enlighten us regarding this CIA document?
