L. Avgenakis may have returned to New Democracy (ND) after the incident at the airport where he was excluded from the "blue" parliamentary group, but relations with the Prime Minister have not been restored.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis's phrase in his previous message to citizens on Sunday that "we will not factor in political cost in the OPEKEPE case" is indicative of his intentions going forward, now that things are getting tough with the arrival of the European Public Prosecutor's new report.
According to information from senior government sources, Maximos Mansion and Kyriakos Mitsotakis personally are ready to drop Makis Voridis, Lefteris Avgenakis, and also Kostas Tsiaras, who is already on the verge of resignation or in danger of being removed from the Ministry of Rural Development in the next cabinet reshuffle due at the start of the year.
Maximos Mansion supports Varras, distances itself from Voridis
Regarding Makis Voridis, Maximos Mansion has already taken a stand against him and in favor of the Prime Minister's advisor, Grigoris Varras. It clearly supports Mr. Varras, and it will be highly interesting when Mr. Voridis goes to the Preliminary Investigation Committee to publicly state why he imposed Mr. Varras's resignation.
The latter has started a war against Voridis and, through social media, practically mocks the former minister, who is now isolated, seething with anger at Maximos Mansion.
Furthermore, he recently formed an alliance with Nikos Dendias concerning the future of the party and his own role within it. Maximos Mansion believes it did its duty towards Voridis by not sending him to the Preliminary Investigation Committee, where he might have risked a Special Court. However, it can no longer cover for him.
No return for Avgenakis
The Prime Minister is also ready to drop Lefteris Avgenakis over the issue of VAT numbers, which he was pressing to have paid. Avgenakis may have returned to ND after the airport incident where he was excluded from the "blue" parliamentary group, but relations with the Prime Minister have not been restored.
He is trying to get closer in every way. We saw his eagerness to greet the Prime Minister at the event hosted by Euripides Stylianidis.
However, if there are revelations about his role in the OPEKEPE case, Maximos Mansion will not hesitate to drop him and support the lifting of his immunity.
Tsiaras under scrutiny, no luck in January
The case of Kostas Tsiaras is being thoroughly investigated by the European Public Prosecutor's Office. However, there is also a political issue. The EU will not provide funds to Greece for the payment of subsidies to farmers and livestock breeders unless there are checks and the stolen money is recovered.
Mr. Tsiaras will again find himself in a difficult position, having to account to thousands of farmers, which is said to have compelled him to submit his resignation to the Prime Minister's discretion. At the beginning of January, everything will become clear about Tsiaras's fate.
Which other high-ranking official is the Prosecutor looking for?
The new report may potentially involve 10 Members of Parliament, possibly more, with the majority belonging to the governing party. Moreover, it is strongly rumored that one of them might be a former minister (not among those previously mentioned) who holds a very strong position within ND. Under this caveat, his position within ND is considered precarious.
