A permanent Chinese presence at the port of Kyllini through an investment by COSCO appears to be in preparation by the executives of the Piraeus Port Authority.
There, they met with the people of the Municipal Port Fund of Kyllini and discussed potential investments in infrastructure and their commercial exploitation.
Within the discussions was also tourism, since the construction of a marina for both small and large sailing vessels is considered a smart investment.
We recall that the port of Kyllini is the third largest in passenger traffic in Greece, as it constitutes the main gateway for Zakynthos and Kefalonia.

Terror in NATO and the US
New data in the field of national security and geopolitical balance in the Eastern Mediterranean are being created by the growing Chinese presence in areas of western Greece, very close to the air base of Andravida, where in the coming years the Greek fifth-generation F-35 fighters will be installed.
The issue has already caused intense concern both to military analysts and within NATO circles, as the region acquires increasingly greater strategic importance for the Western alliance.
Andravida is now considered one of the most critical military installations of Greece and overall of the southeastern flank of NATO.
The 117 Combat Wing is expected to turn into a key operational center of the stealth F-35 fighters, one of the most sophisticated weapon systems in the world.
This development is already accompanied by large-scale upgrade works, high-security installations, and new infrastructures that will be able to support the increased requirements of the specific aircraft.
Within this environment, the reinforcement of Chinese economic and commercial activities in the wider region is treated by several analysts not only as an economic development but also as an issue of strategic importance.
The fears focus primarily on the fact that the presence of Chinese interests near such critical military installations could create a complex framework for monitoring, gathering information, or exercising influence on infrastructures of particular significance.
The F-35 jets constitute the "spearhead" of modern American aviation technology.
They are not just fighter aircraft, but high-technology platforms relying on the exchange of a massive volume of data, advanced electronic systems, information networks, and stealth capabilities.
For this reason, the United States apply exceptionally strict security protocols in every base where the specific aircraft operate.
According to military sources, the works in Andravida are not limited only to the construction of new hangars or technical installations.
They include advanced systems of cybersecurity, electronic surveillance, access control, and communications protection.
The base is expected to operate with elevated levels of information classification, while particular importance is given to the prevention of potential risks of electronic espionage or interference.
Precisely for this reason, any activity of foreign interests near the region is now examined under a different light.
The presence of Chinese business networks or infrastructures is treated not only as an economic investment but also as a potential factor of geopolitical influence.
The issue acquires even greater weight due to the global confrontation that has developed in recent years between the United States and China.
The confrontation between Washington and Beijing is no longer limited to trade or tariffs.
It has expanded to issues of technology, artificial intelligence, telecommunications, cybersecurity, energy networks, and strategic infrastructures.
The US consider that Chinese penetration in ports, transport hubs, and critical infrastructures of European countries can create long-term security and dependency risks.
Greece is now at the center of this new geopolitical reality.
Its geographical position, between Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, renders it a strategic hub both for NATO and for international trade routes.
In recent years, the country has significantly strengthened its cooperation with the United States, both at the military and defensive level.
The expansion of the Greece-US defense agreement, the increased American presence in military installations, and the decision for the acquisition of the F-35 jets show the new strategic direction of Athens.
Within this context, Andravida acquires immense significance.
The base is expected to evolve into one of the most advanced aviation centers of the region, capable of supporting high-technology operations and interoperability with NATO forces.
The presence of the F-35 jets is considered that it will alter overall the balances of power in the Eastern Mediterranean, significantly strengthening the capabilities of the Hellenic Air Force.
At the same time, however, this development also increases security requirements.
Western analysts estimate that in the coming years Greece will find itself even more intensely at the center of the competition of major powers, as the region of the Eastern Mediterranean acquires increasingly greater strategic importance.

Energy routes, maritime transport, military bases, and new technologies compose a complex scene of international competition.
The interest of China in Greece is not new.
The investment in the port of Piraeus constituted one of the most important moves of Beijing in Europe within the framework of the Belt and Road initiative.
However, today Western governments monitor with much greater attention every new Chinese activity concerning critical infrastructures or areas of strategic importance.
Certain experts consider that the concern is not necessarily related to direct moves of espionage or interference, but primarily to the capability that major powers acquire to develop long-term networks of influence at key points.
In an era where information, data, and technological infrastructures play a decisive role, even the economic presence of a country can acquire geopolitical dimensions.
For Athens, the management of this balance constitutes a particularly difficult challenge.
On the one hand, Greece seeks to attract investments and maintain open economic relations with major powers.
On the other hand, it is called to protect critical military and strategic infrastructures, especially in a period where international instability is increasing.
The only certainty is that Andravida and the F-35 jets are now turning into a key point not only for Greek defense but also for the wider strategic planning of the West in the Eastern Mediterranean.
And within this new environment, every move of foreign forces in the region acquires particular weight and is monitored with increased attention by military and diplomatic staffs.
