Political terror in Germany: Wave of arson and attacks against AfD officials by the far-left

The German Interior Ministry expressed deep concern over the escalating threat against members of the right-wing AfD party, following a series of arson attacks and violent assaults by far-left extremists.

The German Interior Ministry raised the alarm about the rapid increase in attacks against members of the right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD), following repeated incidents of arson and physical assaults attributed to far-left extremist groups.

In the most recent incident, the car of AfD parliamentary group leader, Bernd Baumann, was set on fire outside his home in Hamburg early on Monday morning. The fire also destroyed three neighboring vehicles. Security authorities are investigating the case as politically motivated, while a statement posted on an online platform linked to the Antifa network—which concluded with a death threat against Baumann and other AfD officials—is considered authentic.

The attack occurred just weeks after the arson of MP Tobias Teich's office in Munich, another incident attributed to political motivation. According to Bundestag data, between January and June of this year, 808 attacks against AfD representatives were recorded—an average of 4.5 incidents per day—making the party by far the most frequent target of political violence in Germany.

A spokesperson for Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told Bild that there is now an "increased abstract threat" against AfD members, particularly from the "violent far-left extremist scene." She emphasized that extremists are no longer only targeting the party as an organization but are increasingly attacking individual officials, elected representatives, and supporters of the party at the federal and local levels.

The Ministry noted that the Antifa movement justifies its attacks by presenting the AfD's political stance as "morally unacceptable" and considering violence a "legitimate means" of resistance. AfD leaders, Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, called the attack in Hamburg a "direct attack on democracy in Germany" and called on the other parties to show solidarity, stressing that "such acts of violence have nothing to do with political dialogue."

Baumann accused the mainstream parties and the media of hypocrisy and silence: "If there had been an arson attack on the car of a politician from the Greens, the SPD, the Left, or the CDU/CSU, there would be special broadcasts on ARD and ZDF and a discussion in the Bundestag," he told the newspaper Junge Freiheit.
