BRICS prepare new "hard" security initiatives during India's presidency

BRICS prepare new
According to Ryabkov, the BRICS will continue to focus on hard security in the broad sense of the term.

The BRICS may promote new security initiatives during India's presidency, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said in an interview published on the website of the PIR Center think tank. As India prepares to assume the presidency, Ryabkov said he looks forward with interest to the Indian partners presenting their priorities for the future of BRICS. He added that new elements may be introduced in the area of "hard security" within the next year.

Focus on hard security and artificial intelligence

According to him, the BRICS will continue to focus on hard security in the broad sense of the term, without necessarily being a "generator of ideas" or a guiding light in this area. He stressed that some areas are more flexible, such as artificial intelligence (AI), where this year, under the leadership of Brazil, the BRICS for the first time adopted a separate leaders' declaration focused on AI, a significant step that suggests a possible internal transformation of the group.

The philosophy of non-imposition and national sovereignty

Ryabkov pointed out that one of the main advantages of BRICS is the principle of non-imposition: no country is obligated to adopt positions against its will. Participation in BRICS does not automatically imply acceptance of all collective positions, as each member retains its sovereign priority.
The absolute adherence to national priorities, combined with the need for unanimous approval of any decision, may slow down progress on certain issues, but it ensures the complete commitment and comfort of all members within the BRICS framework, the senior Russian diplomat concluded.
