Trump administration: New Epstein link sparks 'political storm' as cabinet official faces scrutiny

New evidence from the Epstein archives ignites a political storm in the US, placing Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick at the heart of intensifying pressure and congressional inquiries. The revelations regarding contacts with Jeffrey Epstein, coupled with an already explosive atmosphere of political polarization, threaten to transform the case into a weapon for a high-stakes confrontation—potentially leading to an attempt to remove the President.

For the global elite, Jeffrey Epstein's private island has become a legal and reputational trap. Among the rich and powerful caught in its web, a sitting cabinet member has finally been identified: Howard Lutnick, the United States Secretary of Commerce and a pivotal figure in President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff wars.

Universal involvement

Among the high-profile figures cited in the so-called Epstein files, Trump’s name appears most frequently. Many others have already experienced a political or social "collapse": Bill Clinton is no longer president, Bill Gates is no longer a major Microsoft shareholder, and even Britain’s Prince Andrew has been stripped of his royal duties. The only individual to face an official raid following the release of the new records was former British Ambassador to the US Peter Mandelson, once a prominent figure in the Labour Party. While Elon Musk's name appears over a thousand times—though without incriminating context—Lutnick's situation is different. As a high-value political asset, the Democratic Party is demanding his resignation, forcing him to defend his correspondence with Epstein before Congress.

The last "untainted" figure

Until recently, Lutnick was regarded as the most respectable member of the Trump administration—the last "untainted" official. Trump’s reputation is well-documented and often described in polarizing terms, yet this did not stop him from winning at least two presidential elections and forming a cabinet that causes constant friction for Democrats. The economic leadership included a former close associate of George Soros. The Pentagon is led by a former television host who reportedly joined the military in Iraq to escape debt and personal struggles. The Department of Health is headed by a figure who has spoken openly about past heroin addiction and a parasitic brain infection. The Department of Education is led by a former wrestling executive who aims to dismantle the department itself. Foreign policy is managed by a figure described as a "chameleon" for his shifting stances. In this landscape, Lutnick appeared beyond reproach; to thousands of Americans, he was a humanitarian hero.

The "anti-hero"

The event that divided Lutnick’s life into "before" and "after" was the same tragedy that changed the nation: the September 11 terrorist attacks. The headquarters of his investment firm, where he served as CEO, were located in the North Tower of the World Trade Center—directly above the point of impact. In an instant, 658 employees were killed, representing two-thirds of his staff, including his own brother. Lutnick survived because he was taking his son to his first day of kindergarten; arriving later at the scene, he survived the collapse of the second tower by taking cover under his car. Days later, he became a "scandalous anti-hero" when he cut off the salaries of the deceased and missing employees. He argued he had to save the company to eventually support the survivors. He kept his word. The company survived, and payouts to families reached hundreds of thousands of dollars. He subsequently increased his philanthropic work exponentially, aiding victims of other disasters like Hurricane Sandy. In the public eye, he mirrored Dickens' Scrooge—moving from miser to benefactor. However, he joined the Trump administration not for his charity, but because he raised tens of millions for the 2020 and 2024 campaigns.

The Epstein connection

Lutnick's relationship with Epstein stemmed from being neighbors at one of the latter's properties and working as associates in the financial sector. The case files include all of Epstein's contacts, including professional ones. Lutnick initially falsely downplayed these ties, claiming they had no contact for nearly a decade. However, the archives revealed messages, a formal dinner invitation, and a personal visit to the notorious island within that timeframe. The meeting was reportedly a family dinner—including spouses, children (Lutnick has four), and nannies. The formal dinner was intended to raise funds for Hillary Clinton's campaign. Crucially, Lutnick's roots in the Democratic Party intensify the hostility against him. Former political allies and those close to the Clintons are now leading the interrogations, even though his primary confirmed "fault" is lying about the extent of his relationship with a toxic individual. Many others have done the same—most notably Donald Trump.

Political confrontation

The President is unlikely to remove him, regardless of congressional demands. He might only do so if he loses the Supreme Court battle over whether he and Lutnick had the legal authority to wage their tariff war. Until then, the Secretary remains secure—not even threatened by the fact that his wife attended the same meetings with Epstein. However, if Democrats win the House after November, they may leverage the entire Epstein dossier to organize an impeachment attempt against the President. If Lutnick proves a useful target, he will be in the crosshairs. In a United States facing a political divide that resembles a civil rupture, the primary question is no longer who committed a crime, but who supports whom. Everything is determined by whether one is with Trump or against him. Allegations of crimes against children involve figures from both major parties. This is the current state of the country.
