METLEN, Thales Alenia Space, and Thales Hellas join forces for Greek defense space program
The partners will formulate an assessment framework on how their expertise and industrial capabilities could contribute to a future integrated defense space telecommunications system

METLEN, Thales Alenia Space—a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%)—and Thales Hellas announce today the signing of a cooperation agreement aimed at jointly preparing for future prospects within the framework of the Greek defense space telecommunications program. The agreement combines the capabilities of the three companies to support Greece's intention to strengthen its sovereignty, security, and strategic autonomy in the space sector, while maximizing the participation of the domestic industrial ecosystem through technology transfer and skills development, thereby contributing to the development of high value-added industrial and technological capabilities in the space sector in Greece.

What the agreement entails

Under the agreement, the partners will formulate an assessment framework on how their expertise and industrial capabilities could contribute to a future integrated defense space telecommunications system. Among what METLEN will contribute to the consortium through M Technologies, the agreement also foresees the potential utilization of METLEN's gallium production capabilities within relevant supply chains for future satellites manufactured by Thales Alenia Space and delivered to international clients. This prospect will complement Thales Alenia Space's expertise in secure telecommunications satellites and related ground infrastructure. The satellite solution proposed by Thales Alenia Space will be based on a telecommunications platform internationally recognized for its reliability, resilience, and speed of deployment. Leveraging flight-proven technologies tested in real-world space missions with demonstrated durability, such a system could provide Greece with secure, sovereign, and jam-resistant communications, helping reinforce national security and space autonomy.
