Russia has reportedly rejected a temporary truce proposed by the US, while a high-ranking Kremlin official publicly stated that Russia will reject many of the latest peace proposals from Ukraine and Europe.
President Zelensky announced on December 22 that Russia turned down a Christmas ceasefire suggested by the United States, which was intended to serve as a signal that both parties are interested in finding a diplomatic solution to end the war.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that Russia's position is clear and that Moscow does not support a temporary ceasefire.
Ryabkov called for a permanent ceasefire only as part of an agreement that eliminates the alleged "root causes" of the war. He specified that a peace deal must guarantee the results of Russia's 2022 referendums in occupied Ukraine and the inclusion in the Russian Constitution of the entirety of the Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson regions as part of the Russian Federation.
