One does not need divinatory skills to perceive the communications game being played on the backs of Greek society.
At the exact moment when government foreign policy collapses resoundingly with developments surrounding the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum and economic asphyxiation crushes households, the government itself, in order to throw dust in the eyes of citizens and monopolize news broadcasts, proceeds with the exposure of mammoth scandals involving "rigged" basketball baskets, "golden" revenue-concealing algorithms like that of Pizza Fan, and arrests of former strip club owners who evolved into bakery chain owners ("Choriatiko").
These are not magical coincidences... it is a well-designed tool of distraction...
Let us initially pose the fundamental questions:
How were they stealing for so many years right in front of the eyes of the state?
Did they not know?
Could they not find them?
How is it possible for enterprises of immense caliber to systematically conceal millions in turnover, set up digital vaults, and defraud public coffers for years?
What kind of magical software programs are these that hide profits?
Where were the audit mechanisms, the heavily advertised algorithms of the tax administration, and the banking audits?
Either they were not doing their job, or they are fooling us...
...obviously they are aiming for the latter.
At a time when ordinary citizens and small business owners are being strangled by the IAPR over the slightest digital «whim» and electronic cross-checks, how can they explain how these rings operated, or the deafening negligence of the state apparatus itself?
Could the blindness of the state mechanism be selective, so long as the interests of the "cronies" are served, and when the government finds its back against the wall, it offers the appropriate communicative "distraction" to give us something to talk about?
Here, the latter is clearly being attempted.
The enduring pattern of the Mitsotakis administration: Government shipwrecks and «deus ex machina» interventions
The tactic of communicative diversion is not new, yet during the governance of Mitsotakis it has evolved into a veritable art.
It constitutes a finely tuned system: The greater the national or institutional "shipwreck", the more spectacular the police or social «spectacle» must be.
Every time the government finds itself confronted with a paramount institutional, economic, diplomatic, or geopolitical failure, a "deus ex machina" appears to alter the agenda on news broadcasts.
Citizens are constantly fed internal current affairs distractions, from arrests of bakers to televised crimes, so they never have time to reflect on the immense responsibilities of the ruling elite.
Fortunately, we do not have the memory of a goldfish...
1. Predator, Qatargate, and the cases of Kaili, Pispirigkou, and Ark of the World
In the summer of 2022, the wiretapping scandal (Predatorgate) breaks out.
The revelation that the EYP, placed under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister's office from day one, was monitoring Nikos Androulakis, journalists (Thanasis Koukakis), and even ministers (Kostis Hatzidakis), causes severe shockwaves and forces the resignations of Grigoris Dimitriadis and EYP Governor Panagiotis Kontoleon.
During the exact same period when the government was facing suffocating pressure from the European Union and the PEGA committee, mainstream media flooded the television landscape with 24-hour, obsessive coverage of the case of Roula Pispirigkou in Patras.
The judicial proceedings of a gruesome criminal case were turned into a reality television spectacle for continuous consumption, causing the revelations of the ADAE and questions over illegal spyware to vanish from the 20:00 news broadcasts.
Because that was not enough...
In October 2022, a complaint is filed and the horrific case of Kolonos is exposed, involving a young teenager and a pimp.
Police proceed with the arrest of Ilias Michos and 11 other individuals involved.
In November 2022, a case erupts that shocked public opinion regarding the «suspicious» deeds of the head of the Ark of the World, Father Antonios, and the matter assumes terrifying proportions.
In December 2022, while the Mitsotakis government was still facing revelations regarding wiretaps on political figures and journalists, a new scandal shook the European political scene.
The arrest of Eva Kaili in Brussels, within the framework of the investigation into Qatargate, monopolized media interest for days.
Revelations about suitcases of cash, potential bribery, and networks of influence in the European Parliament created a new, extraordinarily powerful news front.
Qatargate was an independent case of the Belgian judicial authorities, but with many domestic dimensions.
2. The Tempi crime and the Greek Mafia, hysteria over "Social Media / TikTok", and the climax of the "Ark of the World" scandal
The unthinkable tragedy of February 28, 2023 in Tempi with 57 dead completely dismantles the narrative of the "modernizing executive state".
Revelations regarding the collapse of railway safety and the concrete paving over of the crash site provoke an unprecedented public outcry.
While the wave of anger swells, the government narrative shifts instantaneously:
Toward scapegoating station masters and "human error" to keep political leadership out of the frame.
Toward reviving issues of juvenile delinquency and offenses (police raids, school inspections, measures against fan violence) to direct public attention toward «law and order» and youth problems.
In spring, judicial proceedings in the Ark of the World scandal peaked, with the news monopolizing news broadcasts; however, when Father Antonios was unanimously acquitted for the Ark of the World case in Ioannina in October 2026, nobody paid attention.
In 2024, one year after the Tempi tragedy, political and judicial developments continued to provoke strong reactions.
Debate regarding responsibilities, railway safety, management of the crash site, and the functioning of state mechanisms remained open.
Concurrently, news cycles were fed by revelations regarding the activities of the so-called Greek Mafia, operations by the Hellenic Police (ELAS), and investigations into organized crime networks.
3. The OPEKEPE scandal and the "battles" over inflation
The collapse of agricultural subsidies, massive fines from the European Union, and the corruption scandal at the compromised agency OPEKEPE irreparably expose the Ministry of Rural Development, triggering farmer roadblocks throughout the territory.
The government responds with the familiar communicative fireworks of the «household basket» and ostensible "strict inspections" to clamp down on economic crime and tax evasion across multinational supermarkets.
Instead of apologizing for millions of euros in EU funds lost to "cronies", the government apparatus stages media shows featuring ministers photographed in front of shelves of cooking oil and milk, passing off responsibility for high prices to the "imported crisis" and "greedy profiteers".
What makes the difference
Wiretaps, Tempi, OPEKEPE, organized crime, and now illegal betting baskets, "devious" software programs, and large police operations...
Different cases, with different gravity and different institutional dimensions.
The simultaneous appearance of two major news stories does not in itself prove organized diversion.
What does prove it is the political cost each one incurs on the government, and the methods and means it enlists to mitigate that cost, particularly during a pre-election period when it sees its polling numbers crashing, the seat of the leader of the ruling party wobbling dangerously, and public challenge to his authority hitting red alert.
