Russia: New version of the Geran-2 drone with R-60M air-to-air missile – Significant upgrade in interception capabilities.

Russia appears to have developed a new, upgraded version of the Geran-2 drone, which functions as an interceptor and can be armed with an R-60M short-range air-to-air missile. The existence of this version was revealed on December 1st, when Ukrainian media published a video of the drone's interception, as well as photographs of its debris, where the missile was clearly visible.

Configuration and technical specifications

The R-60M missile was mounted on a typical inverted APU-60-I launcher on top of the drone, likely to leave the underside free where the rocket-motor takeoff mechanism is installed.

The Geran-2—the Russian version of the Iranian Shahed-136—is a propeller-driven drone with a range of approximately 2,500 kilometers and a cruising speed of 180 km/h. Its basic form is used as a "kamikaze" drone, with a GLONASS-assisted inertial navigation system and a 30–90 kg warhead.

The new interceptor version is estimated to feature a thermal detection system, as well as a two-way data link, enabling it to target aerial objectives. The R-60M missile, introduced in the 1980s, features a nitrogen-cooled infrared seeker, improved sensitivity, and increased resistance to flares. Weighing only 45 kg with a 1.6 kg warhead, it is suitable for small UAVs like the Geran-2. Its engagement range reaches 8 kilometers.

Purpose of the new system

The new variant is not expected to be used to shoot down other drones, but for the aerial interception of slower Ukrainian aircraft operating as "drone hunters"—such as helicopters or light fixed-wing aircraft—which operate in the conflict zone.

Due to the lack of anti-aircraft systems, Ukraine has significantly increased the use of such assets to counter Russian UAVs. Thus, a Geran-interceptor could be launched after the wave of attack, targeting the Ukrainian assets that remain airborne. However, its effective use will require precise intelligence, coordination, and timing.

Rapid expansion of the Geran program

In 2024–2025, Russia has significantly expanded the Geran program. According to recent reports, production could soon reach up to 6,000 drones a month, including:

  • Geran-2 (basic version – "kamikaze")

  • Geran-1 (lighter, with a pusher engine)

  • Geran-3 (jet variant, much higher speed)

Versions for reconnaissance, loitering munitions, and mine dispersal are also being tested, which indicates that the Geran family is evolving into a multifunctional system with a strategic role in the theater of operations.
